My First Blog Post

Most nature photography is simply about the subject, and there are some beautiful, gorgeous images that show off that subject, whatever it is and wherever it is found. This has been an important part of photography for a long time.

I want to offer something more to consider, adding context to your images. I have covered this before, but this is very important to me as both a photographer and naturalist.

Context is about the environment of the subject and/or a larger view of the subject itself. So for example, a photo of a flower might include the setting around it (the environment) or more of the plant itself (the larger view). This is not an arbitrary use of a “wide-angle.” It is about a deliberate use of composition to communicate something different to a viewer.
